2009 President’s Report

The year 2009 was quite the year for Portland chapter #1006. Learning from the previous year as to the falling attendances of our monthly dances, the board decided, in wanting to restrict that drop in numbers, to reduce the monthly to a quarterly dance, one every four months. Many points of interest were discussed and debated at our board meetings as to the merits, advantage-disadvantage of, the value, benefit of reducing the dances to four.

Day of Dance

Day of Dance 2010 flyer

There is an old Eskimo saying that “free is a very good price.” Well, on September 18th, free is what you will get, as in dance lessons. Portland #1006 is sponsoring the annual “Day of Dance,” where we offer dance lessons in Rumba, Waltz, East Coast-West Coast Swing, Salsa, Foxtrot, and who knows what else will come up. This is our way to introduce to those intrepid souls who have always wanted to dance, but were rather timid about it, to actually get a lesson or two, or three, or all of them! Within the relaxed casual setting of the Scottish Rite Temple, this is the day where the newcomer or beginner can be exposed to a variety of dances taught by some of Portland’s best professional dance instructors, who have volunteered their services for free! You know someone who so wants to learn to dance, so, tell them about the Day of Dance!

The activities begin at 10:00am, concluding at 4:30pm. A short break follows before the hot Salsa lesson at 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Then we have our general dance party, from 8-11pm. There is a charge for this evening dance party. $7 for members of USA Dance, $10 for nonmembers. All in all, you will be assured of having a great time with fellow dancers of all ages and levels. It’s the beauty, energy, poetry of dance that gets us all involved. And let’s not forget the socializing with new found friends, renewing old friendships, and just having a wonderful day/evening at our Day of Dance!

And to top it off, there will be a couple of hot and exciting Salsa showcase performances courtesy from pro instructor Bree Blevins!
So come on! Tell your family, friends, co-workers, fellow coffee drinkers, everyone you meet! This is the Day of Dance and the lessons are FREE!

Quest for the Best Competition Series in Seattle

January 29, 2011

We are pleased to invite you to the first of three Quest for the Best dance competitions in 2011! The Seattle USA Dance chapter hosts a 3-competition scholarship series called the "Quest for the Best". We award placings at each event, and scholarship winners are determined by points accumulated over the course of the three events.

  • Scholarship purse. The scholarship purse was $2,000 plus for 2008, 2009 and 2010.We want to offer a larger scholarship purse this year. The scholarship purse is created by taking a portion of the profits and distributing the money per the rules posted on our website at www.qftb.org. So invite your friends and family to support you by coming to the event and watch you compete. The more dollars at the door the larger the scholarship purse. Come and join the fun.

  • Convenient on-line registration and ticket sales. Online registration for the January 29 QftB is available on our Web site at www.qftb.org. Tickets are $15 at the door; they are not available on-line. The on-line registration deadline is Thursday, January 20, 2011.
  • Learning opportunities! This is a perfect opportunity to debut a new partnership and polish competitive skills. Local audiences are very supportive, especially for newcomers.
  • Formation Teams. To help create affordable opportunities to participate in DanceSport, the Quest for the Best is offering formation teams doing demos to attend at no charge. Any member of the formation team competing in other events will have to pay the entry fee. More details on our site at www.qftb.org.
  • School Name. Your school name is required this year to help make it easier to contact you. If you do not want to specify a school please use "School – Multiple" or "School – Not Applicable".
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

We are looking forward to seeing you!
